| Spanish Government to the Rescue: 20 Buses to Ease Liberia’s Transport Problem 06/05/07 - Executive Mansion |

| Monrovia - The Government of Spain has pledged 20 buses to support Liberia’s public transport system. The disclosure according to an Executive Mansion release was made on Wednesday by outgoing Spanish Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Francisco Tejada, when he went to bid farewell to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the Foreign Ministry as he ends his tour of duty. Ambassador Tejada said the buses are being donated by the Spanish private sector and the Municipality of Barcelona. Modalities are being worked out for the buses to arrive at the shortest possible time. The Spanish Government has also asked the Government of Liberia to waive all custom duties when the buses arrive. The outgoing Spanish envoy expressed his thanks to President Johnson Sirleaf for her recent visit to Spain in March, adding that the visit was one his best souvenirs during his tenure as Ambassador to Liberia. The Liberian leader thanked the Spanish Government for its support and said Government will do all it can to ensure that the collaboration between both countries yields results. The President asked Ambassador Tejada to convey her thanks to his government for the buses pledged; emphasizing that Liberia’s public transport sector remains a critical area for government. Custom duties, the President assured the Spanish envoy, will be waived once the buses are brought into the country. In a related development, the President has directed Education Minister, Dr. Joseph Korto to work along with authorities of the University of Liberia to address the transportation problem students at the University are experiencing. The President said government would work along with the University in addressing the transportation problem. The President gave the assurance Tuesday when she met with authorities of the University including sosme members of the Board of Trustees. University President, Dr. Alhassan Conteh said his administration had already embarked upon a comprehensive plan to address the problem. Dr. Conteh welcomed government’s intervention which he said would go a long way in relieving the University off some of the pressure of transporting students to the Fendal Campus of the institution. |
